What To Do When Things Seem To Be Falling Apart

Nature's Wisdom

Has life been a bit more challenging for you recently? When the world seems hard, chaotic, and even dangerous, and I feel it must clearly be falling apart around me, I turn to nature to remind me of big truths. For example, I love how nature shows us that some things fall apart EVERY YEAR …and then usually grow back again, sometimes bigger or stronger (or maybe more fruitful) than the year before.

Another example: the moon grows for half a month and shrinks for half a month. Every single month it looks like it’s becoming something whole and complete; then, the very next day after it shows us its full and powerful beauty, it immediately starts shrinking! If you only lived for two weeks, you would have a very different understanding of the moon. Your limited perspective would only see part of the truth of the moon’s monthly transformation. Would you be able to trust that it will become whole if all you’ve ever known is it shrinking?

Curiosity Brings Inner Peace

I took nature’s truth nudge and created two cards/pictures with questions that bring me a feeling of relief and hope in troubling times. The questions are as follows: 1. What if everything is falling into place perfectly, even if it looks like it’s falling apart? and 2. What if everything is working out in surprising and beautiful ways?

To bring nature’s teaching into your personal awareness, please read the question on each picture out loud and see how each one makes you feel. What do you feel in your body when you ask each one? Where in your body do you feel it?

Journal Prompts to Go Deeper

Take a moment to write down any thoughts you get when you read the questions out loud (and perhaps meditate on each one). To help you go deeper, you can use these writing prompts…

When I say the words: “What if everything is falling into place perfectly, even if it looks like it’s falling apart?”,

 I Think:

I Feel (sensations in my body):

I Remember:

I Hope:

I Choose:

When I say the words: “What if everything is working out in surprising and beautiful ways?”,

 I Think:

I Feel (sensations in my body):

I Remember:

I Hope:

I Choose:

To go even deeper, consider which one of these What If Pictures feels easier to believe? Which do you prefer? Which one gives you more hope?

Can you think of a time when something in your life looked like it was falling apart, only later to discover it helped create something good for you (sometimes better than you could have imagined it)?

Can you get to a point of assuming that things are going to work out in surprising and beautiful ways? Can you believe this is possible as you keep being who you are and taking steps that you intend to create a positive outcome?

A Big Step Toward Transformation: A Course In Miracles and Ho'oponopono

If you can’t believe it’s possible that things are falling into place even if they look chaotic and perhaps scary, there’s a process that might help you start to grow that trust in Life working on our behalf and the behalf of those around you. It’s actually a combination of two key teachings: A Course in Miracles and Ho’oponopono. In Chapter 6 of Dr. Seema Khaneja’s book, Physician, Heal Thyself, she introduces the Ho’oponopono prayer and offers some thoughts on how to see the four main phrases through the lens of A Course In Miracles.

The process is to think of the situation that is causing you emotional suffering.  Acknowledge the pain/fear/anger/frustration. Then begin to repeat the four phrases below, including the details in the sentences that follow the key phrase (but not the information in the brackets - that’s just to give you a deeper understanding of the phrase). Here are the phrases and their details. Simply read it out loud while thinking of your situation. If you want to name the situation and/or people that seem to be causing your peace to be disturbed, that is okay, too, but not necessary.

The Prayer

I’m sorry: I am sorry that I do not see our true Self, the place of love and light, of purity and innocence. I accept responsibility for the error that lies in my perception.

Please forgive me: I seek forgiveness for the mistakes in my perception whenever I see lack, guilt, powerlessness, pain, fear, or unworthiness in myself or others.

[Further explanation: We can apply this prayer to ourselves as well, whenever we are holding ourselves in a space of self-blame, judgment, or guilt. Whenever we say “Please forgive me,” we are essentially asking for forgiveness of ourselves (or a washing or clearing away) of all our interpretations, reactions, and self-judgments. Forgiveness is spiritual alchemy that transforms our mind. It offers us a way to neutralize the energies of our judgments and re-set our minds to a state of being open, empty, and a clear, blank slate. Into this empty space, the love and light that was there all along, but merely covered with layers of fear and judgment, can shine through.]

Thank you: Thank you for the opportunity to become aware of the errors in my perception. Thank you for being the catalyst for my reaching more deeply into my mind beneath the surface of fear and lack to the place of healing and wholeness.

I love you: Only love is real and all else is false. Inner light, please shine brightly inside me and clear away all darkness and ignorance inside my mind so I may see everyone and everything through the eyes of love and light.

[Summary: We take responsibility for all our interpretations, reactions, and judgments about whatever we perceive and experience (in ourselves or others around us). We express that we are sorry and ask for forgiveness (of ourselves or another, or both). We express our gratitude for this opportunity for our healing and for the healing of the whole. Then we simply say, I LOVE YOU.]

It Takes a Village/When Two Or More Are Gathered...

Reach Out And Touch Someone: Most transformation processes are better when shared with a safe and loving connection - a friend, family member, mentor or coach. To really bring any shifts you receive from the journaling or the prayer process, I highly recommend that you reach out to someone and invite them to discuss the pictures and questions and also the prayer if you felt it was helpful. Share your story of things seeming like they are falling apart and listen deeply to theirs.
